Dear Mr. Trump,
There’s a well known idiom which was first introduced to the science world somewhere around 485 BC by the Greek physicist/philosopher Parmenides. He stated that a void or a vacuum, in nature, cannot exist. Years later Aristotle declared the famous dictum horror vacui commonly known as nature abhors a vacuum. This observation happened to rile the feathers of quite a few people over time and yet, its wisdom has persevered down thru the centuries.
(Most recently the famous Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explains that gravity is the culprit here on earth as the nature of vacuums pervades the universe. So this statement isn’t 100% true outside of gravity’s influence. But I digress.)
This particular idea, however, gave birth to the development of a number of surprising concepts:
• (450BC) atomic theory
• (1643) barometer
• (1650) vacuum pump
• (1650) piston and cylinder
• (1657) air pump
• (1690) steam engine
• (1645-1897) gas laws
• (1865) the science of thermodynamics
In the art world the term is known as kenophobia, from the Greek "fear of the empty". It’s the practice of filling of the entire surface of a space or an artwork with detail.
The term has evolved to include the idea that empty or unfilled spaces are unnatural and go against the laws of both nature and physics. Not only can this be found in scientific structures, but overwhelming evidence points to its truth in power structures as well.
Our current international policy of political politeness with those who seek our destruction has left the United States looking more feckless and apathetic than we did 34 years ago under the Carter Administration. Back then we voted in the type of leadership who guaranteed that we would no longer bow down to the bullying Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran. Thank you, Ronald Reagan.
Today, the apparent inability of anyone in the Obama administration to isolate, identify and call terrorism for what it really is has crippled our image of strength to our allies and enemies alike. The world is looking for a leader and right now based on the seeming incompetency of our dear leader, Russia has gladly shouldered that mantle for the time being leaving our current American President a mere laughing stock.
Russia, with Vladimir Putin at the helm, despite all of its current economic problems (due in part to the volatile decline of oil prices worldwide) has carefully crafted an imposing cultural stature and swelling nationalistic pride within its peoples. This outpouring of Russian pride appears to rival the best of American Patriotism post 9/11.
This can largely be attributed to the barrage of strategically posed pictures of a shirtless fishing, horseback riding, scuba diving, antique finding Mr. Putin (strutin’ the infamous Putin pout). It’s also due to his fearless positioning against the ISIS terrorists in support of the Assad regime in Syria.
Meanwhile we get vacation pictures from Martha’s Vineyard of our leader, grinning happily, wearing mom jeans and riding a bicycle complete with a plastic coated safety helmet and matching chin strap securely in place.
Now if you remember correctly back in August of 2011 Mr. Obama proclaimed that “Assad Must Go” which inadvertently signaled to those in ISIS that America was supporting their violent version of diplomacy when in fact our leader was siding with the various rebel factions also fighting against Mr. Assad.
Mr. Putin has openly backed Mr. Assad with all the armaments Russia could muster up while thumbing his nose in America’s direction. Mr. Obama was challenged at the UN recently with Mr. Putin declaring that he will continue to fight against the ISIS threat and strengthen Mr. Assad’s ability to defeat them.
This then, brings me to you and the hope that a Trump administration would bring. The media is still wondering aloud why anyone would want to vote for you. For those of us not taken in by the various social distractions provided by Hollywood we are very concerned about the world you could very well inherit post 2015.
We are encouraged by some of the most carefully chosen, deliberate words of your campaign so far. You get things done. We heard it first back in August. We want you to know how utterly refreshing it is to hear you say that you don’t have all the answers…but that you’ll get the best people in their respective fields to find and design answers to our very real problems to advise you.
True leadership doesn’t assign blame and it doesn’t quit. True leadership accepts responsibility and scratches out a way to accomplish the impossible…the inconceivable…resulting in the success of the inevitable.
True leadership surrounds itself with best minds available in a civil society and together builds a secure future which would make the genius our founding fathers all the more exceptional. And so, this little social experiment called the United States of America would be able to continue its distinctive march into the next 239 years.
Keep talking Mr. Trump. We like what we’re hearing. There are those of us out here listening…needing to see that you’re in this fight to the end. You make the entrenched political prognosticators extremely uncomfortable…for that we are truly grateful.
Watching from the sidelines,
Roger J Conway
