Dear Mr. Trump,
It’s been awhile since I’ve reached out to you so I decided to take a few minutes today with a few words of encouragement. The people who are behind you are very interested in your decision to sign the pledge.
I was looking for the caveat…the one little glimmer of hope (for those of us who despise the Republican Establishment) to hold on to. And I know everyone watching your news conference today missed it.
It seems this afternoon you’ve got the attention of the RNC Chairman Reince Priebus all to yourself. Oh, and he’s also invited New York GOP chairman Edward Cox to his little get together. If I was a betting man, my guess is this isn’t going to be a friendly little chat. No…I’d say this is going to be the Establishments Elites feeble attempt to strong arm you into playing by their rules.
Rules they’ve recently decided to create just for you. The fact that you’ve held out this long has served to propel you into your first place status in both national and local polling. So this strategy has certainly worked in your favor. I’m not surprised by the RNC’s need to get you onboard. They need you more than you need them. And they know it. So do you. Here’s what it must have been like behind those closed doors.
That’s when my microphones in the room went dead. But I know how the rest of this thing went down. The reason why I know is because of what you said in the middle of your news conference when all bodies assembled watched you hold up the pledge they so desperately needed you to sign.
See, I believe the Republican Party got a message from their donors that sounded something like this: “We’re shutting down the money flow until you corral Trump. That man is playing havoc with us and we tired of him playing us like fools. Get him to sign the pledge or all our money in your campaigns dries up!”
And so Reince Priebus went to your office, hat in hand, to beg you for an act of mercy...an act so benevolent it would change the course of the history of the GOP. The day Donald Trump bestowed relevance, once again, to the Republican Machine.
You stated the obvious…There’s nothing to gain from you for signing this document. They (the GOP) didn’t promise you anything. They didn’t need to. You don’t need them for anything. You’re Donald Trump…you still hold the “Trump Card” (I still can’t believe I wrote that.)
Here was your news conference with all the reporters salivating…cameras rolling, over the news that Trump capitulated…GOP Wins!!!
And then the caveat…the one little glimmer of hope I was waiting for…the one snippet of hope signaling the truth of the afternoon’s activities. And you delivered…masterfully. They never even heard it. But we did:
You stated “you got nothing in return” and you see no circumstances under which you would "tear up that pledge." That subtle little reference was your caveat…nothing’s changed…it’s all good. Play nice and I won’t embarrass you and your little pledge.
I’m surprised they didn’t send in the good doctor Charles Krauthammer. He could have gotten this much done. But I’m sure he wasn’t available.
Watching from the sidelines,
Roger J Conway

- RP: Donald…let’s be reasonable. We know you’re currently leading the pack, but your methods of bombastic statements tend to leave us looking foolish. We’ve got an image to keep with our donors and right now we need to give them something they can hold on to.
- DT: You know Reince, I know how you guys work. I’ve been paying good money for many years which the members of your party, and the Democrats I might add, you guys were all too happy to take. So, my main concern with your little pledge here has more to do with playing nice. That’s all…plain an’ simple. Just play nice with me.
- RP: That’s why we’re here, Donald, that’s why we’re here. We want to play nice. Help us play nice. That’s all we’re asking.
- DT: How’s this work out for me? I mean, so far, my campaign’s been built on my complete disregard of your pledge. Why change my mind now?
- RP: Look at it this way, Donald. If you don’t sign the pledge then we’re going to change the rules across the board preventing anyone from being on a Republican primary ticket without signing it. We’ve already petitioned two states to amend their balloting process and we’re sure to get the others in line. That’s not a bluff…don’t make us take this thing further than it has to.
- DT: That’s it? That’s your grand plan…the great strategy? Why on earth would I ever agree to that?
- RP: There is no future for your campaign without being on the primary ballots.
- DT: Oh, I see. So that’s how this is gonna be….you think this little piece of paper is going to keep me in my place? You realize of course this doesn’t change a thing, right?
- RP: What do you mean?
