Dear Mr. Trump,
So here it is roughly a week since you blew through Burlington, VT bringing your unique brand of activism to Bernie’s Backyard. I found myself wondering why you would take the time to go into an area traditionally hostile to anything remotely Republican. (Everyone knows that they regularly feast on Conservatives in the northern country.)
The minds up here are open as long as your ideas are progressive…funny how closed they become when faced with opposing conservative concepts.
The uniqueness of your planning wasn’t in the fact that you picked Burlington to hold your campaign event. I guess you didn’t get the memo that only like minded progressives are allowed in the Evergreen State. See, the only good New Yorker is the Bernie Sanders kind of New Yorker. The Donald Trump New Yorker isn’t Vermont enough…must be a Brooklyn thing.
It wasn’t the fact that the venue was entirely too small to contain your green mountain fan base. Secretly, I think people up there just never imagined that you could actually get 100 people to attend your event much less 1300. When word got out how you flooded the market with an online invite the plan was laid by hook or by crook to protest you back to the Stone Age.
It wasn’t even in your decision not to engage the protesters even after they lied their way into your event. Many people took issue with your decision to have them escorted from your venue…especially when you instructed your security to remove the protester without his – gasp! – winter coat.
It didn’t matter that those protesters were immediately swarmed with support and they really didn’t spend the night out in the cold…or that they were going to eventually get their coat back. What mattered to the haters is you are a bully and that you are erratic.
Despite knowing that anything you said or do would be placed under the scrutiny of the ever growing lens of political correctness you set up camp in the Flynn Center. People came from hundreds of miles away willing to stand in 20 degree weather for hours just to hear you speak.
And there were protesters…my goodness there were protesters. You know, those open minded middle of the ground sort who’s willing to look past the imperfections of their bias to really probe to uncover the truth about your positions. Yeah, those protesters never really showed…
But the haters…those protesters were out in full force.
They set up across the street and raised a ruckus every time one of their own got ejected…seven times in total. But, since you spoke for the better part of an hour the cheers outside were spaced roughly a quarter of the applause inside. That is (roughly) one round of applause every three minutes…yeah not bad for someone who isn’t a seasoned politician.
Your perceptive instinct was on full display as the word got out that you had encroached upon the very bastion of the Liberal territory no self respecting establishment Republican would ever set foot on. And there you were…
Declaring the best of what America can be…to those who remember her former greatness in word and deed. When her allies and enemies alike knew her word was her bond and they never questioned her steadfast loyalty.
I understand why you held your event up there. If nothing else you showed that you believe in the words you speak and you aren’t governed by fear…that you are willing to bring your vision to all Americans wherever they live; regardless of their own individual political persuasion.
Some took issue with the fact you filtered the participation of your event with those who would declare an allegiance with your candidacy…but you understand the importance of demonstrating the resonance of your message even in a Liberal Stronghold like Vermont.
What ever your reason…that single unrehearsed act did more than I think you even realize. You established a level of professionalism and honest to goodness sincerity that can’t be refuted. You showed a willingness to reach out to everyone…even those who couldn’t bring themselves to agree with you on any level…no matter what state they lived in.
And that’s why you’re leading in the polls…you can take an innocuous action and turn it into an examination of who you are. And that’s why people can’t get enough of you…why people love to hate you…why people struggle to like you.
You’re like the doctor who promises you’ll get better if you only take this rotten tasting medicine. You hate it but you know it’s going to be good for you in the long run.
Yeah, when push comes to shove most republicans would stay away from Burlington, Vermont just because the outcome of a visit there isn’t predictable…why risk a perfectly good campaign run on a state so prone to views which generally run opposite of yours?
Then again, those kinds of predictable politicians are running far behind you in the polls and have very little to show for all the money they’ve spent to take you down and do away with you once and for all.
